Who is it for?

Level 1 is for Adult beginners with little or no knowledge of the language, or those who want to brush up their French.  Students usually wish to communicate in French when they travel, work or spend their holidays in France.  The emphasis of the course is on listening and speaking skills, and students are encouraged to participate actively in the language activities.

What will I study?

At level 1, you study 5 Themes.  The first Theme is compulsory, then you can choose 4 other Themes.  The Themes available from September 2006 are:

Level 1

Theme 1 Introducing yourself and giving personal information

Theme 2: Shopping

Theme 3: Eating Out

Theme 4: Finding Accommodation

Theme 5: Giving and understanding directions

Theme 6: Using telecommunications

How long does the Course last?

AMF Tuition offers you more flexibility than a normal Adult Education Class.  Provided you finish within 2 years, you can sign on at any time and take as long as you want.  Most people will need 40 hours teaching time plus 20 hours self-study to complete each level, practically speaking about a year.

Do I have to take an exam?

No! Students of "Real French" do not take exams.  At level 1 assessment sessions take place at the end of each theme.  Assessment takes the form of a role-play between you and the tutor, recorded on tape.  Don't worry if you've never done this before, it is not done in "exam-type" conditions and is a Record of your Achievement.  You only do the Assessment when you and the tutor feel you are ready.

Do I have to buy a textbook?

Level 1 uses Breakthrough French Book 1, and we listen to tapes which come with the book.  However you don't need to buy the book to complete the course.

How much will it cost?

Level 1 prices for 2006 are £18.00 per hour one-to-one

£10.00 per half hour for 30 mins oral tutorial on the phone, or £40.00 for 5 tutorials.

When do I enrol?

Unlike an Adult Education class, you can enrol at any time.  Just  email amftuition@tiscali.co.uk  You will be given plenty of help in deciding which course is for you.

Where does it take place?

Usually you come to the tutor's house, in exceptional circumstances the tutor will travel to you.
