Adjectives 1:  masculine and feminine agreements

An adjective agrees with the noun it describes

Feminine

Add e to the adjective to make it feminine (when it describes a feminine word).

Je suis grand                                      I am tall (m)

Je suis grande                                                I am tall (f)

If the adjective already ends in e in the masculine there is no change in the feminine.

Il est mince                                        He is slim

Elle est mince                                    She is slim

Similarly add es to the adjective to make it feminine plural.

Ma mère et ma soeur sont grandes                        My mother and my sister are tall

Masculine

Add an s to the adjective to make it masculine plural (when it describes a masculine plural word)

J’ai les cheveux blonds                     I have blond hair (nb les cheveux – hair- is masculine plural in French)

If the adjective already ends in s in the masculine there is no change in the masculine plural.

Elle a un T-shirt gris                         She has a grey T-shirt

Il a les cheveux gris                          He has grey hair

Marron brown (describing eyes) and chic smart/ chic do not agree with the noun. We call them invariable adjectives.

Elle a les yeux marron                      She has brown eyes

Il porte des vêtements chic              He wears smart clothes
